School Health Programs

School Nurse Services

School nurses help ensure healthy students while allowing faculty and administrators to teach and lead. Nurses in schools promote wellness, provide physical and mental health services and help ensure the overall well-being of students and staff. And, nurses often provide staff training and work with parents to personalize specific care for students with special needs. VNA contracts with various public, private and parochial schools in the metro area to provide nurses as part of its commitment to a healthier community.

No two schools are alike — VNA nurses personalize the services they provide based on the needs of the students, the resources available from the school, and the priorities of the administration and parents. Available services include health evaluations and screenings, wellness education, care for students who are sick, disease prevention and control, and staff training.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do VNA nurses do in schools each day?

No two days are the same, but usually the nurse will check in with school administrators to get updates on changes on any individual students receiving special care. The nurse focuses on providing services the school has identified as a priority. And of course, the daily focus can change quickly if an emergency situation arises.

What regular services does the school nurse provide?

VNA customizes the services provided based on the needs identified and the resources the school has available. These can include:

  • Identifying students with special needs and work with parents to develop action plans
  • Health evaluations
  • Guidance and care for children who are ill
  • Height, weight, vision, hearing and oral screenings
  • Immunization record reviews and reporting
  • Communicable disease control and prevention
  • Wellness education
  • Referrals for primary care, community resources and education programs
  • Staff training in areas like infection control, medication administration, CPR and first aid, and the mandated emergency asthma and anaphylaxis protocol
