During a typical visit the parent coach will assist the parent to identify and set individual goals, the coach will provide education on life skill development, healthy relationships, parenting topics and refer to community resources, when needed. The nurse will complete maternal-child assessments including weight and developmental assessments of the infant/child, provide education on health, safety, nutrition, and a variety of parenting strategies, and collaborate with other providers working with the family.

Young Mother Finds Support Through Love & Learn Program
Much of Nancy’s childhood was spent in foster care. When she became pregnant at 17 years old, she didn’t have a supportive family to depend on, so she enrolled in the Love & Learn program.
Love & Learn’s Impact
Designed especially for pregnant and parenting teens and young adults 25 years and younger living in Douglas and Sarpy counties, Love & Learn is a free home visitation program offered by VNA and Nebraska Early Childhood Collaborative.
Public health nurses, social workers and parent coaches work together with young parents to create personalized goals related to health, parenting, school, and employment, and families may be referred to other partner agencies for additional resources. Participants also have the opportunity to attend monthly socialization events, which are designed to increase the teens’ social support systems.
